چکیده

objective: the use of hema as a biocompatible material in dentin bonding systems and its potential for clinical applications has been well established. excess water can affect conversion of bonding resins. the aim of this study was to survey the effect of water on the degree of conversion of hema by fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (ft-ir). materials and methods: in this experimental study, distilled water was added in amounts of 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4 ml to 1 ml of curable hema solution. six repetitions per water ratio were made and investigated. each sample was polymerized for 60 seconds. degree of conversion was obtained from the absorbance ir-spectrum of the materials before and after polymerization by ft-ir spectroscopy. one way anova and tukey-hsd were carried out to compare and detect any differences among groups. results: statistical analysis indicates highly significant difference between pairs of groups at level (p<0.001). the results showed a trend of decreasing in hema conversion with increasing water. degree of conversion changes significantly within the 0.05 ml to 0.2 ml water range. however, degree of conversion did not change after reaching 0.02 ml and before 0.05. conclusion: degree of conversion of hema decreased by increasing water. the most dramatic effect of water on the polymerization process occurs within a range which exists under clinical conditions. the reason that the degree of conversion did not show significant result before 0.05 ml may be related to the hydrophilic nature of hema.

FT-IR Spectroscopy in Medicine

Infrared spectroscopy has been widely applied for the characterisation of various substances. Due to its sensitivity to the chemical information and architecture of the molecule, infrared spectroscopy can play an important role in new applications such as in the life-science field and not only in the traditional fields of physics and chemistry. Spectroscopic techniques are simple, reproducible,...

Application of FT-IR Spectroscopy for Investigation of Pink Water Remediation by Pine Bark

This study demonstrates the application of FT-IR spectroscopy for investigating the remediation of pink water with the low cost adsorbent pine bark. The removal of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) from pink water by adsorption to pine bark was accompanied by a reduction in intensities of peaks at 1544 and 1347 cm in the spectra of acetonitrile extracts of the pine bark. Hierarchial cluster analysis ...

Rapid characterization of microbial biodegradation pathways by FT-IR spectroscopy.

Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy has become an important tool for rapid analysis of complex biological samples. The infrared absorbance spectrum could be regarded as a "fingerprint" which is characteristic of biochemical substances. In this study, Pseudomonas putida NCIMB 9869 was grown with either 3,5-xylenol or m-cresol as the sole carbon source, each inducing different metabol...

Identification of Condom Lubricants by FT-IR Spectroscopy

In many cases, especially those involving sexual assault, forensic scientists are searching the biological evidences such as blood, skin, hair, saliva, urine, semen for DNA analysis. Recently, the uses of condoms in sexual assault cases were increasing to avoid leaving the biological traces in the crime scene. In these cases, finding the condom lubricant traces from the victims can be valuable ...

Study on antibacterial alginate-stabilized copper nanoparticles by FT-IR and 2D-IR correlation spectroscopy

BACKGROUND The objective of this study was to clarify the intermolecular interaction between antibacterial copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) and sodium alginate (NaAlg) by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and to process the spectra applying two-dimensional infrared (2D-IR) correlation analysis. To our knowledge, the addition of NaAlg as a stabilizer of copper nanoparticles has not be...
